PRS introduce the brand new John Mayer Silver Sky signature guitar – the result of a close collaboration between John Mayer and Paul Reed Smith. Two and half years in the making, the Silver Sky is a vintage-inspired instrument based on Mayer and Smith’s favourite elements of their 1963 and 1964 Fender Stratocasters but with Mayer’s signature specifications combined with PRS legendary precision engineering details…
The PRS John Mayer Silver Sky features an Alder body with the distinctive Stratocaster shape from 1963/64 but with the trademark PRS lower horn scoop. The neck is bolt-on construction Maple with 635JM neck shape inspired by the vintage guitars John & Paul had. Fingerboard is East Indian Rosewood with scale length of 25.5” and radius of 7.25” with 22 PRS Acoustic Frets and revised small birds inlays. PRS have flipped the trademark headstock shape to allow for extra clearance because of Mayer’s large hands and his playing style. This plus the vintage tuners give the Silver Sky an exclusive look.
The hardware has been completely re-tooled based on Mayer’s specs. These include a bone nut, moulded curved metal jack plate, retooled knobs, fretwire that is slightly smaller than most PRS electrics, and PRS’s double action truss rod. The bridge features a steel tremolo set up differently to regular PRS guitars. The back edge of the tremolo plate is always resting on the body of the guitar in neutral position – ensuring constant contact with the body when at rest position.
The pickups are a trio of 635JM single coils again based on the best parts of the 1963 and 1964 pickups from John and Paul’s favourite guitars – hence the 635 name representing a combination between 63 & 64.
“It’s been a dream of mine for years to design a guitar that includes some of my favorite vintage specifications but with a modern spirit and aesthetic. After two years of study and refinement, the Silver Sky is my vision of what a reboot of the electric guitar should look and feel like.” – John Mayer
